In this chapter, some common methods for conducting qualitative research are explored. Each method is described with a clear focus upon data analysis. The following analysis methods are described: content, thematic, framework, documentary, narrative, and discourse analysis. These are commonly used in qualitative research, and by giving an overview across them, their similarities and differences are revealed. Real-world examples of each type of analysis method are used to improve understanding of the application of each method in a palliative care population. The appraisal of quality in qualitative research is also highlighted. How to appraise quality is explored, including use of checklists, credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability. Reflexivity is discussed, as it is a key component of many qualitative approaches.
