Abstract

Borderline intellectual functioning (BIF; also called borderline intelligence) is defined as a range of intellectual quotient (IQ) between 70 and 85 or 71-84 depending on classification, which places it at the lower end of normal intelligence but above the cut-off for intellectual disability (69 and below). BIF, while often difficult to quantify, maybe associated with significant impact on functioning as well as the presence of several mental disorders and poorer health and social outcomes for the affected individuals across the lifespan. The aim of this chapter is to discuss ascertainment of BIF status, the prevalence of comorbidities and the overall management of and service provision to individuals in this group.
