Abstract

From the systemic functional and cognitive perspectives, this paper presents a review of the domestic multimodal discourse research in 2021 from three aspects: literature on previous studies, theoretical development, and application studies. It finds that multimodal discourse analysis remains predominant in discourse research in 2021, in terms of both theoretical exploration and application expansion. As to the former, Multimodal Grammar and Multimodal Extended Metaphor are the most noteworthy representative achievements, whereas as to the latter, Visual Grammar, Synthetic Theoretical Framework for Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Critical Multimodal Metaphor Analysis are widely applied to varying types of multimodal discourse, among which the multimodal pedagogical discourse is the focus. As regards to the types of multimodal discourse investigated, a noticeable expansion and diversification have been witnessed, with a particular interest on promotional videos, movies and other dynamic multimodal discourse. As to research methods, empirical researches with digital analytical tools grow remarkably. In general, our research needs a big stride as the case with the international community in multimodal corpus-based discourse analysis and neural study of multimodal metaphor. These cutting-edge researches involve interdisciplinary theoretical knowledge and research methods, which may also be the new trend for future domestic research.
