Abstract

This chapter engages with subtitles and streaming, as it presents a critical consideration of the cultural politics of Welsh-Anglo translation through a reading of the “Tywysog Cymru” episode of the Netflix series The Crown. This sees the chapter go back and forth between Shakespeare’s Richard II and its use in The Crown, and between how discourses of Englishness spanning the reigns of the two Queens Elizabeth have positioned Wales and the Welsh language. In the course of considering issues of translation and access, the author reflects on her own experience of arriving at university in Wales as a monolingual English-speaking student, and The Crown’s rendering of spoken Welsh into English subtitles.
