Full text not available from this repository.Abstract
This is an introductory piece to three generations of the Hawley family, based in Brentford, who have been almost entirely overlooked in histories of the UK or of Britain's global influence in the early-modern period. This is a popular local history magazine but the research is based on the author's extensive archival research and this piece is key in establishing the nature of Britain's adventurist colonial practice, economic growth and political corruption and the extent of the trade in enslaved Africans.
