This entry draws our attention to the surfaces on which women wrote. It suggests that Isabella Whitney’s second miscellany, A Sweet Nosgay (1573), helps to complicate the idea of the surface as a geometrically bound concept as understood three years earlier in Henry Billingsley’s translation of Euclid’s Elements of Geometry (1570), a view that continues to pervade twenty-first-century anglophone cultures.
