The purpose of a legal education has long been a topic of contention. Some consider the primary purpose of a legal education to be the development of a deep understanding of the law, placing great emphasis on legal precedents, principles and case law. In contrast, others emphasise the need for practical skills in legal education, both to support students’ ability to apply the law in practice, to enhance employability and to meet the growing demands from employers and students that law graduates are better equipped to work in an increasingly competitive profession. Importantly, these approaches are rarely diametric; most academics sit somewhere along the sliding scale from advocating a traditional approach to advocating a practical legal education.
