The detrimental effects of ozone on plants are well documented, but a clear understanding of the biochemistry of these processes is still lacking. Here, arguments for and against the involvement of endogenously produced hydrocarbons in ozone damage are reviewed, and suggestions made for specific experiments to resolve current uncertainties.
