Paluš, Milan and Stefanovska, Aneta (2003) Direction of coupling from phases of interacting oscillators: An information-theoretic approach. Physical Review E, 67 (5). 055201. ISSN 1550-2376

A directionality index based on conditional mutual information is proposed for application to the instantaneous phases of weakly coupled oscillators. Its abilities to distinguish unidirectional from bidirectional coupling, as well as to reveal and quantify asymmetry in bidirectional coupling, are demonstrated using numerical examples of quasiperiodic, chaotic, and noisy oscillators, as well as real human cardiorespiratory data.

Additional Information:
Introduction of a new technique for deducing the directionality of interactions between coupled nonlinear oscillators from their time series data, based on information theory. Showed that respiration drives cardiac oscillations in healthy subjects. Applicable not only to physiological oscillatory processes, but in much wider contexts too [26 citations].
