Abstract

Right-wing populist parties are gaining popularity worldwide, forming powerful opposition groups and, in countries such as Poland or Hungary, are already in government positions, where they are pursuing a policy of nationalism, isolation and fear. This trend is also intensifying in Germany and Austria, while the boundaries of what can be said are constantly shifting. It is striking that populist propaganda can often no longer be countered with rational argumentation. Even if people with anti-democratic attitudes are factually defeated in debates, they often succeed in emerging from such debates, e.g. from talk shows or interviews, as winners in the perception of a broader public. For this reason, it is important to focus on the mechanisms of power and manipulation that anti-democratic rhetoric employs and to examine their function in the digital communication age. As part of her research, linguist and emeritus professor Ruth Wodak is looking at the strategies that right-wing parties and conspiracy movements pursue to gain support, and how these can be effectively countered, beyond the left-right paradigm.
