Social isolation and loneliness in older adults are a growing public health concern especially as there is an established link between loneliness and mental and physical health and wellbeing. Demographics are shifting towards population ageing and approximately 25% of the population will be over 65 in the next two decades. The objectives of this umbrella review are to explore how effective technological interventions are at preventing and alleviating social isolation, increasing social participation and improving health outcomes. A systematic umbrella review with an interdisciplinary focus of technology interventions to reduce social isolation and loneliness in older people was conducted. A systematic search of five databases between 2000-2020 was conducted using search term synonyms for older people, social isolation and technology interventions. Articles were screened and data was extracted. JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist, alongside R-AMSTAR and GRADE were used to assess the quality of articles with quantitative outcomes. A meta-synthesis was completed to examine the effectiveness of technology interventions alleviating social isolation and loneliness in older adults, which provided a synthesis of high-quality evidence on their effectiveness. It is envisaged these insights will benefit design and development of technologies that can contribute to older adults' health and well-being through reduction of social isolation and loneliness.
