This is the introductory chapter of Handbook of Iranian cinema where it brings together scholarship from both established scholars and early career academics to provide fresh insights and new research on the cinema of Iran. This chapter offers a succinct history of Iranian cinema and scholarship setting the ground where the other chapters in the volume extend the scholarship to new heights. It also attempts to fill in the gaps where this volume has not offered new perspectives.
