The academic publishing landscape is dominated by a handful of major Western corporations. Thus, the Open Access landscape is increasingly imperilled by the processes of platform capitalism. This entrenches the dominance of wealthy academics and institutions from the Global North, the bias to English in academic publishing, and pressures academics in the Global South to neglect local issues for publication on issues of interest to a US and European audience (Okune 2019). Bibliodiversity, or the support and promotion of books in a variety of languages and local contexts, is thus a practical application of postcolonial thinking and decolonization. This presentation demonstrates how the Open Book Collective utilises an alternative publishing model we call "Scaling Small," in opposition to the neoliberal drive for monopoly and standardization, to collectively support and network a range of small to medium OA publishers from across the world, assisting them in moving away from the Book Processing Charges which can entrench inequities further.
