Abstract

This chapter introduces the importance of “culture” to analysing “discourse”. It offers a brief survey of the different meanings of “discourse”, “discourse analysis” and “culture” and presents critiques that there has been little reflection on the cultural origins of discourse research. The chapter then focuses on three culturally inclusive approaches to discourse: the Cultural Approach to Discourse (CAD); Cultural Discourse Analysis (CuDA); and Cross-Cultural Discourse Analysis (CCDA). Examples of representative studies are given for each of these approaches. As a way of conclusion, the similarities, and differences between CAD, CuDA and CCDA are highlighted.
