The growing interest in the development of writing in higher education has led to the emergence of various programs that seek to support students in the difficult task of learning to communicate academically in the context of their disciplines. Within this framework, this article gives an account of the theoretical options and some strategic actions considered in the design of a writing program in the Chilean university context. The integration of theoretical models of diverse nature is discussed, pointing out the contribution of each of these lines to achieve the objective of the program. Likewise, the strategic decisions related to its creation are detailed and its importance is argued to design an organic program consistent with the needs and principles of the institution.
