The Ames test was applied to a range of Welsh soil samples to define the typical range of mutagenic activity in soils. Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100 typically gave 6 - 19 and 24 - 38 revertants per gram soil, respectively. A general trend towards increased mutagenicity in soils with elevated PAH levels was observed.
