Abstract

In the design of microwave magnetrons it is important to know the frequencies and impedances of the resonant modes of the anode. This paper describes how that has been achieved for both strapped and unstrapped anodes using the computer package MAFIA. The π mode frequency of a 14 cavity strapped anode was computed to an accuracy of 7% using 86,000 mesh points. It is believed that the accuracy could be increased by using more mesh points. Simulation using MAFIA can therefore be used in place of cold test experiments to design new magnetron anodes. An equivalent circuit model has been developed for strapped anodes in which the values of the components can be estimated from closed-form expressions. The model was analysed using PSPICE and it was found that the dispersion curve computed could be fitted to that computed using MAFIA by making small adjustments to the circuit elements representing the straps. The equivalent circuit model can be used to investigate the effects of design changes on the properties of the anode.
