Abstract

Infants are not passive recipients of information but are curious learners who explore their world based on their intrinsic motivation. We review the main theories of the mechanisms underlying curiosity – the search for information for its own sake – and the means by which infants explore their environment, ranging from visual examination of objects to manual exploration and requesting information from social partners.
