This essay is a contribution to the the international research project on nature, procedures and functions of the comical, organised by the Forschungsplattform Elfriede Jelinek, Vienna, which aimed to reflect on the current state of research on the comical and to establish new, interdisciplinary research approaches to it. As a contribution to the working group on modes of performance (Spielweisen), my essay examines postdramatic directorial approaches to the production of comical moments in Jelinek stagings. I argue that the postdramatic shift to formal playfulness does not leave the serious content behind but rather heightens it. Just like Jelinek's texts often interlace comedy and tragedy, postdramatic direction often interlaces comical and tragic elements. Especially the investigation of the relationship between the comical and the uncanny (Unheimliche) is important when analysing Jelinek productions in order to fathom the seriousness of the comical in her work.
