By bringing together theories of cultural geography, new materialism, and peer production, this chapter develops a theory of technological power within participatory mapping. Focusing on the technologies of participatory mapping such as GPS, peer platforms such as OpenStreetMap, useful tools such as drones, and the practice of indigenous countermapping--as well as the ways that productivity is harnessed and enabled by state and corporate forces--provides a corrective to arguments about peer-production as a form of autonomy.
