Abstract

The drive to implement Ubiquitous Computing systems has driven the development of numerous research prototypes. Distributed systems platforms have emerged, each addressing a subset of the overall problem space. In contrast, many other scientific disciplines have success- fully embraced a standardised vision of a global distributed computing platform, i.e. the Grid. While the Grid certainly is far from perfect plat- form, in this position paper we argue that significant potential exists for building ubiquitous computing applications on a hitherto unprece- dented scale. Additionally, we explore the areas of synergy between Grid computing and ubiquitous computing and highlight a number of com- mon research challenges, and argue why this platform should be used to accelerate the deployment of ubiquitous computing.
