The International Congresses of Psychology were the first self-consciously international body to draw individuals from across the globe for the exclusive purpose of discussing the subject of psychology. The proceedings of these meetings thus provide a view into the active process whereby psychologists from different countries met one another and communicated their conceptions of psychology as a subject and discipline. These Congresses were also instrumental in delineating different practices of the discipline along national, geographic lines. At the international Congresses a psychologist was a representative for his or her nation's brand of psychology. The congresses were an important venue where competing ideologies were discussed and where representatives of different nations forged an international culture of psychology.
