Abstract

Vertical axis crossflow turbines will suffer from significant torque fluctuations, which can seriously shorten the fatigue life of their component parts. This study uses a balde element momentum model to perform numerical analysis on vertical axis turbines with a broad range of choices for design parameters, and attempts to find parameter combinations which can reduce the level of torque ripple without sacrificing power output. Variable pitch is investigated and certain areas of operation are discerned where varying the pitch of the blades can provide optimal performance with respect to both torque ripple and power output.
