These drawings investigate possible models for a critique of consumer culture and the impending possibility of environmental disaster. The compositions centre on the notion of a millennial deluge of trivial possessions raining down resulting from Davies's engagement with Leonardo da Vinci's drawing A Cloudburst of Material Possessions. Davies's investigation also involves study and recovery of the medieval idea, 'Horrovacui' (abhorrence of the void, potential space for evil to inhabit). In response, the resulting drawings are overloaded with contemporary material and information. These two drawings were selected from a larger body of 35 works, the consequence of an intense period of study over a year in which Davies had AHRC-funded sabbatical leave. Executed in charcoal on handmade paper, the drawings are 1500cm x 90cm. The drawings were created within an environment where hundreds of contemporary objects were suspended from the ceiling by cords, chains, fishing lines, ranging from teapots, clothing and abandoned white goods (the products of consumer culture), a physical recreation of the imagined deluges. From this installation, Davies made the drawings. This was a peer-selected group exhibition by artist Len Massey, Head of Drawing at the Royal College of Art.
