Early Career Researcher. Will.0.w1sp is an interactive installation. The research questions an observer's ability to recognise human movement separated from human form. Creation of the installation required development of new methods for generating live imagery and sound from digitised human motion as well as articulating new ways of using interaction to focus an audiences' attention. The piece was funded through a '15,000 grant from the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, NL (Amsterdam Foundation for the Arts) (NL) and '5,000 corporate sponsorship from Blue Haptic BV,(NL). The sound was developed in collaboration with Carlos Guedes from (ESART-IPCB), Portugal. Guedes was commissioned and directed by Woolford. The installation was developed through an iterative process where the concepts and software were presented in various forms at local and international level including: ACM Multimedia; Monaco Danse Forum; Mediamatic Salon (NL); Waag Society for Old and New Media (NL); (re)Actor First International Conference on Digital Live Arts (GB); and Northwest Art and Design Research Group (GB). Feedback was requested after each performance or symposium and the piece was changed or refined based on what was learnt from the showing. Ars Electronica commissioned a version of Will.0.w1sp for 'Listening Between the Lines' where it was performed with a live orchestra before an audience of 900 and broadcast on Austrian Television. Madrid based Fundacion Telecom selected Will.0.w1sp to represent the Vida Art and Artificial Life prize at ARCO'06. Will.0.w1sp was presented in a closed session to 800 researchers, curators, and journalists, then opened to the public where more than 10,000 people went through the installation in 3 days. Woolford's journal article (Will.O.w1sp) was published in Performance Research (2006) and three conference papers at international conferences in 2007. RAE_import_type : Artefact RAE_uoa_type : LICA
