Early Career Researcher. An annual curatorial project founded and directed by Hemment recently awarded Regularly Funded Organisation (RFO) status by ACE. Hemment has raised '915,564 since 2000 with events staged in Asia, Africa, North America, South America and Europe. It is conceived as a catalyst for moments of creative emergence across boundaries. The focus is an annual festival, which has informed many international projects. It contributes to the field of interactive media arts internationally, with focus on social technologies, art and the city; the most recent iteration presented at Manchester Arndale which had a footfall of 1 million people and was viewed by a TV news audience of 4 million. Futuresonic has advanced new knowledge, for example with the Mobile Connections exhibition at the Urbis Museum Manchester (2004), the first major exhibition worldwide on mobile, wireless and locative arts, exploring forms of expression intrinsic or unique to mobile and wireless media, and led to the proposition that locative art can be understood to be ""the art of mobile and wireless systems"". A curatorial article was published in an exhibition catalogue with ISBN; a four week discussion was moderated by Hemment on the CRUMB online list; and it was followed by the 'Mobile Effect' (2005) article in Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies in which Hemment related the exhibition's findings to Hosokawa's (1981) argument that the Walkman - an earlier form of mobile media - similarly connected people to their environment in unexpected ways. Mobile Connections led to the creation of PLAN - The Pervasive and Locative Arts Network via a bid to the EPSRC Culture & Creativity programme, and an invitation to curate Always On at Centre de Cultura Contempor'nia Barcelona, and Off The Map at Museum of Science and Industry Manchester.
