Additional Information:
This monograph is part of the BFI Modern Classics series and engages both creatively and critically with Terence Davies's 1988 film, Distant Voices, Still Lives. In addition to exploring the influences of other cinema (e.g. work by Bresson and Bergman) Farley focuses on Davies' unique visual style, and considers ways in which domestic space and phenomenology, visual art, accent and idiom, class and cultural responses all offer fresh ways in which to 'read' the film. The book also seeks to address analogies and parallels between textual poetry and a grammar of cinematography, as well as exploring Davies' use of stasis and movement in relation to the still photograph. Taking full advantage of this series' aim to bring creative writers and critics into close proximity with an individual work (whilst also drawing on autobiography), the book is able to posit, at some length, several entirely novel ways of regarding this landmark piece of British cinema. The series has a wide dissemination and has grown into a highly regarded body of interdisciplinary texts engaging with cinema.
