Additional Information:
The Ice Age is a collection of poems that engage with identity, memory, landscape and class. The work is respectful and aware of both tradition and traditional prosody (sonnet forms, ballad, alliterative meter and terza rima are all engaged with) but is elastic enough to admit many registers of address: ekphrasis, 'found' poetry and cinematic effects are just some of the strategies employed alongside those arising from the more usual lyric 'I'. Each poem in the collection works as a confluence, where canonical reading, contemporary idiom and the imagination meet. 'Research' in this context involves a lifetime's reading and experience. Many of the poems in this collection were originally published in the Times Literary Supplement, the London Review of Books, or Poetry Review, whilst some were broadcast on BBC Radio 4. The poem 'Thorns' was the result of collaboration with visual and sound artists, and was published on compact disc with the Wordsworth Trust in 2001. The book, now in its fourth reprint, went on to win the Whitbread Poetry Award, was the Choice of the Poetry Book Society, short-listed for two other major awards (T.S Eliot Award and Forward Prize), and reviewed both widely and favourably.
