Abstract

We investigate stochasticity in a periodically driven oscillator for which the dependence of the frequency of eigenoscillations on their energy has an extremum. The structure of stochastic layers is shown to be different from the case of conventional nonlinear resonance. It is also shown that the Chirikov resonance-overlap criterion does not work at small enough amplitudes of the driving force: the transition to global chaos takes place at much bigger amplitudes.
