Abstract

This is an extended book review of John Harrington, Towards a Rhetoric of Medical Law (2017) that comments above all on the author's attempt to combine the rhetorical turn in law with systems-theoretical arguments. It identifies the heuristic power of the approach but also notes some limitations regarding the variation, selection, and retention of competing rhetorical arguments and the kinds of constraint - not merely systems-related -- that might influence this.
