Abstract

Are there competitions among countries and how do they compete with one another? Drawing on Hidalgo et al.'s (2007) research on "product space," the current study investigates how countries compete with one another in the international market. It proposes "country space" by using social network analysis and visually presenting the competitions and the cooperation among countries. Great heterogeneity of country space suggests competitions among countries. Comparable countries cluster together in a hierarchical order in the chain of capability, which reflects a portfolio of advantages and technology differentiation between countries and the clusters. Countries climb up the technology ladder by putting more effort into the advantageous industries where they have the advantages in the advanced technologies.
