Abstract

This article considers the literary comment of two contemporary Cameroonian writers on the mismatch between the official policy of bilingualism and the linguistic reality of what has been described as ‘one of the most multilingual countries on earth’. Francis Nyamnjoh and Patrice Nganang write from opposite sides of Cameroon’s official language divide – Nyamnjoh’s A Nose for Money is written in English, and Nganang’s Temps de chien in French. However, the writers share a preoccupation with the question of language, as well as with the sociopolitical realities of contemporary Cameroon. This article outlines the context against which the policy of official bilingualism was instituted in Cameroon, and considers the strategies adopted by Nyamnjoh and Nganang in order to portray the constraints of official bilingualism, drawing on Edouard Glissant’s notion of multilingualism to understand the creative ways in which Nyamnjoh and Nganang express the multilingual reality of Cameroon in their literary texts.
