Abstract

We demonstrate that the quasi-particle excitations of a two dimensional inhomogeneous superconductor may be localised by spatial fluctuations in the order parameter Δ (r). Two models of disorder are introduced. In the first, the magnitude of Δ (r) varies randomly, but the phase is constant. In the second, the phase varies randomly with position, but the magnitude of Δ (r) is constant. A finite size scaling technique is used to compute the inverse localisation length of long strips of finite width. The results suggest that for a two dimensional superconductor, fluctuations in |Δ(r)| can localise excitations, while fluctuations in the phase alone cannot.
