Additional Information: This paper relates research on configurable protocols with recent developments in aspect orientation. It analyses the characteristics of configurable protocol stacks that were proposed in the 90s. This comparison shed a new light on the emerging field of distributed aspect-oriented frameworks, and showed how they could evolve to tackle issues of distribution, timeliness, security, and adaptation. This work was accepted at AOSD, the premier conference on aspect-orientation. (Acceptance rate in 2006: 21%) RAE_import_type : Conference contribution RAE_uoa_type : Computer Science and Informatics
