This chapter first outlines the Anglo-Saxon approach of the 'New Literacy Studies', putting it in relation to the French 'Anthropology of Writing' tradition. Research in paperwork in educational workplaces is then described to show how a focus on literacy practices from an ethnographic perspective can give insight into broader social processes.
