Based upon the first time full publication of most of the materials pertaining to the Marxian project of a ' critique of political economy' that was meant to revolutionize and transform the theories of classical political economy, an assessment of the real achievements, the lacunae and unsettled questions of this unique endeavour in the social sciences of the 19th century is given.
