Abstract

This is the first full-length study in any language of monastic communities in the Crusader States. Comprising two distinct parts, examining in turn Latin and Orthodox foundations, the book examines the circumstances of foundation of new monasteries, the internal governance and economy of monasteries, spiritual life, and relationships between monasteries and lay society.
