Abstract

Diatom siica is a form of biogenic opal that contains oxygen isotopes which can be used in lacustrine and marine paleoenvironmental studies. Diatom δ18O is a useful indicator of paleoenvironmental conditions, reflecting either the temperature or the oxygen isotope composition of the water in which the diatoms grew. In lakes, the latter is a function of evaporation or changes in the source of rainfall. Analysis of diatom δ18O requires highly concentrated samples of almost pure diatom frustules.
