In response to concerns over the health implications of journey-time exposure to air pollution, this paper uses GIS to incorporate modelled pollution concentrations into a path network, enabling network analysis to be used in order to identify low exposure routes. Results from this initial case study show that exposure levels on low exposure routes are typically 20% lower than those based on shortest distance, suggesting that the design of less exposed walking routes could have benefits for human health.
