Abstract
In ¿Qué he hecho yo …!! and La comunidad, Carmen Maura plays Gloria and Julia, two characters who struggle to survive in Madrid. In addition to offering a commentary on late-twentieth-century sexism, these films foreground class prejudices and the tensions of a big urban centre. Both films enact the famous slogan of the 1980s, “Madrid me mata”, to suggest that these women's husbands need to be killed for a new environment to be born.
