    Abstract

    This article explores the origins and development of a Third Mission unit in the Department of Geography at Lancaster University which focuses on business development for the tourism industry. The article evaluates the issues around knowledge transfer in the tourism sector between academia and the industry, particularly among small firms in North West England.
