Abstract

This paper presents the results of fast user trial of multimedia services that are enabled when a mobile terminal has access to converged services over digital broadcast and mobile telecommunications networks. It first describes the motivations behind developing this system and describes the service scenarios that benefit most from it. It then provides an overview of the service components of the test case scenario. Finally, it presents the results of fast user trials on end users of the services that were developed. This work was conducted as part of the EU-funded CISMUNDUS project.

Cruickshank was equal contributor to both the article and the system it describes. This article details a new approach to interface and service design in interactive TV (iTV ) as part of the Information Society and Technology (IST) (EU) funded project CISMUNDUS. CISMUNDUS was one of the key EU projects establishing the capabilities and possible applications of the newly developed 3G telecommunications networks and interactive TV; it included partners such as Philips Research, France Telecom, Rye, IRT and Motorola. This article describes the development of services for this new hybrid environment that draws together iTV and Telco networks. This approach involves linking two separate technologies, previously thought to be 'unlinkable' and its significance is that it allows for the intelligent computer translation of service design from a very accessible widely used simulation/authoring software (Macromedia Director) into MHP, the much less accessible language of iTV broadcast. This has implications for usability testing as it allows an intimate link between visually sophisticated simulation and final broadcast services. Cruickshank led the user interface design and information architecture of the new services developed in the prototyping process in addition to a broader contribution to the design of the simulation design tools. A practical demonstration of this system, using live broadcast media, was presented as part of the IST media village at the International Broadcasting Conference 2005. CISMUNDUS was part of a number of EU projects that informed the development of the new protocol for broadcast to mobile devices DVB-H. RAE_import_type : Journal article RAE_uoa_type : LICA
