Additional Information: The research provides greater understanding of the ideas of Lawrence Alloway (1926-1990), one of the most influential and widely-respected art writers of the post-War years. Whiteley's work deals with changing meanings and implications of pluralism in fine art through Alloway's writings. Research at Alloway's archive in New York, subsequently purchased by the Getty, was funded by the British Academy in 2002. The article was commissioned by Artforum to provide an historical context for their themed-issue examination on 'Pop After Pop.' Following publication, Whiteley was invited to give a paper on Alloway at the conference on Abstraction's Utopia: Politics of Perception in the Extended Field of Visual Culture, organised by the Universit' Fran'ois-Rabelais in Tours (May 2005). The article has also contributed to a growing interest in Alloway (and other members of the Independent Group), reflected in Tate Britain's decision to organise a two-day symposium (March 2007) on The Independent Group and its Legacy for Today. Whiteley was one of the three-person organising committee that invited eminent speakers from the USA, Australia, Europe and the UK. Whiteley has also been commissioned to write an essay for a forthcoming book entitled The Whole Story: British Art Since the Second World War, edited by Rasheed Araeen and sponsored by the Black Umbrella Project. The essay of 8,000 words examines the importance of Alloway in the late 1950s in terms of the development of British Hard Edge painting. The editor has described Whiteley's essay as 'brilliant' and plans to publish the essay initially as the 'central' essay in an issue of Third Text devoted to British history and cultural marginalization. Whiteley's research on Alloway will culminate with a monograph to be published by Liverpool University Press in 2009.
