| Additional Information: | The writing of Beyond Representation was funded by an AHRC research leave grant (2003). This book interrogates some of the key assumptions concerning the relationship between aesthetics and the politics of identity that have influenced and informed television drama criticism over the last thirty years. Discussions drawing on feminism, queer, post-colonial and anti- racist theory are consolidated through case studies that offer analyses of a range of television drama texts with an emphasis on the languages of representation through which they are constructed. This book questions established presumptions concerning the 'progressiveness' of specific models of subjectivity and identity developed under poststructuralism and postmodernism and the specific forms and modes of representation with which these models have come to be associated.
