Additional Information: | An invited contribution to a conference which took a comparative approach to environmental history in Britain and Germany. The paper's ideas were incorporated into a successful bid to the AHRC Landscape & Environment Programme, as a result of which Winchester is currently developing these themes as co-investigator of the 'Contested Common Land' project, one of the programme's major interdisciplinary research projects.
