Additional Information:
Hawk is a novel that fuses both research and creativity through its deployment of historical fact and situations in a way which is neither entirely imaginative storytelling nor historical novel. Indeed, Hawk is deliberately playful in its treatment of history, steering a course between the studied anachronisms of a writer like Julian Rathbone and the high historical seriousness of the novels of Patrick O'Brien. The novel thus encourages the reader to view history as material for story-telling, to be treated with respect but not reverence. Important throughout is an examination of Joseph Campbell's idea of mythic storytelling as the Hero's Journey, and the novel combines both myth and realism in a way that uses the glamour of the former and the clarity and force of the latter. By virtue of this mythical-cum-realistic treatment of history Hawk is very obviously a companion piece to Hound. RAE_import_type : Authored book RAE_uoa_type : English Language and Literature
