Abstract

Data for the M3/M27 ramp metering pilot scheme (near Southampton in the UK) were analysed to identify the benefits of the existing control measures; and to develop macroscopic and microscopic simulation models. These were subsequently used to investigate the potential of a new approach to ramp metering, based on the latest developments in state space and predictive control theory. The results demonstrate that the widely applicable algorithm developed, incorporating more advanced queue regulation, has the potential to reduce queue lengths and on-ramp waiting times, whilst still maintaining the overall travel time savings already demonstrated.
