Experiments on noise-driven electronic models are being used to test fundamental tenets of fluctuation theory. It is shown that large fluctuations in equilibrium systems display time-reversal symmetry, as had been widely assumed, whereas those in far-from-equilibrium systems are irreversible and exhibit rotational flow.
