Abstract
A formula is given whereby the frequency, amplitude and phase of a sinewave signal can be obtained from three equally spaced samples. The performance of the frequency estimator is investigated when the signal is corrupted by noise, and algorithms developed which use additional samples to improve the results. It is shown that even under noisy conditions it is possible to obtain a good estimate of frequency using samples taken over a period of less than one cycle. The results are confirmed and amplified by computer simulation.
